Kirkintilloch High School

This year at Kirkintilloch High school, S1-S3 pupils were all involved in a some fun activities related to Languages and Europe.

S1 pupils were asked to use recycled items to make a European Landmarks. They learned about the different landmarks and then made theirs plus a poster to explain what they have made and give some facts about them.

S2 pupils were asked to make a poster about a European country of their choice. After spending a period in IT room doing some research they made their poster where they had to have the name of the country, the flag, 5 words in the languages and some facts.

S3 pupils had to complete a quiz about celebrities and the different languages they speak. They had to walk across the classroom to give the name of 50 celebrities plus the different languages they speak.

Everyone had a lot of fun and we enjoyed the various prices we had received from SCILT.

Keith Grammar School

At Keith Grammar School this year, for European Day of Languages on Tuesday 26th September, the S6 YASS Languages girls (Rachel Morrison, Nicole Gerrie, Caitlin McDougall, Erin Roger, Julia Calder and Lora Panayatova) have been in charge of organising activities to raise awareness of the importance of learning languages.

As well as planning, organising and leading house group assemblies in the run up to European Day of Languages, the YASS girls have put their leadership skills to the test and have organised a range of activities during the week.

These activities included:  European sports being played during core P.E. classes, the European Day of Languages Interhouse Quiz, which was held in the library and European food tasting in the hall.

St Margaret's Academy

At St Margaret's Academy in Livingston classes took part in a range of different activities - create an Eiffel Tower with straws, creating posters on language learning, playing French boules, songs, games and quizzes.

S6 pupils visited S1 pupils to give them a taster Italian lesson.  S6 pupils were later rewarded for their hard work with a Croquembouche dessert!

There was a whole school smart time activity which was a video of staff and pupils speaking in different languages and pupils guessing which language they were speaking and what they were saying.

We also held a staff fiesta to thank staff for their support and encourage them to get involved in language learning.

We ran 2 competitions through the week - a Twitter competition where pupils had to create a slogan to promote language learning.  Our winning Tweet was from Isla Keogh in S1:

"Your 1st language is a corridor and every one you learn is a door.  Every door opens a new opportunity, aim for yours to be unlocked"  

Special mention to Alicia Boden in S4 for "Learn more languages and use the advantages" and Rebecca Eyles in S2 for "A language is like a bag of sweets, there are so many flavours." Isla's prize was provided by local Italian restaurant Prezzo, a meal for 2! 

We also ran a poster competition for S2 of which Leena Abbas and Aaqib Baig were winners. 

Largs Academy

This week all S1 pupils had the opportunity to take part in lots of activities to celebrate European Day of Languages.

They were able to sample a little bit of Portuguese - Mr McFadyen's samba dancing was a major highlight! We also had Jianxing teaching some Mandarin - feedback for this activity was great and some of our pupils even suggested they would like to study Mandarin in the future.

Pupils with a flair for the dramatic loved creating Music Videos with Miss Mitchell, Miss Lawson, Sarah and Star - the singing and dancing skills were second to none.

Lewis and Mrs Tait were on hand to give pupils some insight into colonisation and share some stories from their recent trip to Malawi. This gave our pupils a greater appreciation of the great work that Mrs Tait and her Charity Committee do for our Partnership School in Malawi.

Pupils were able to put their team building and engineering skills to the test with Miss Gall's Eiffel Tower Building Challenge. This activity brought out the competitive side of our pupils with some great attempts to re-create the Eiffel Tower using only newspapers and tape.

Pupils tested their knowledge of Europe and used their ICT skills with Miss Kerr's Ipad Treasure Hunt Quiz. All of the pupils worked hard to find out a little more about the geography and languages of Europe.

Finally, a real highlight of the day was the video of teachers speaking different languages. Many thanks to Miss Gall for creating the video and all of the fantastic teachers who contributed to make a great reminder of a great European Day of Languages 2017.

Speyside High School

At Speyside High School, our S1 and S2 classes took part in a Euro Quiz which featured rounds including Sports Personalities and Music, as well as General Knowledge and Famous Landmarks.

On European Day of Languages itself, our school canteen provided a European menu, with food such as lasagne and Neapolitan ice cream.

We had a poster competition for the whole of S1 – Why Learn a Language – and 2 winners were picked from each class. Finally, we had an engineering project for S1 and S2 – each group were given 20 straws and a length of string and were tasked with making an Eiffel Tower. We think our winners did an excellent job!

Cumbernauld Academy

This year’s European Day of Languages took place on Tuesday 26th September, the modern languages department organised various fun, educational activities for pupils to take part in.

S1 pupils enjoyed filling in European passports and defining foreign phrases. S2 pupils got competitive in the European quiz with questions relating to sports, music, and culture among many other things. Pupils in S3 were given the task of choosing a word or phrase and translating it into as many European languages as possible. Teachers around the school also celebrated the day with many saying a few phrases in a European language in their class including, French, German, Spanish, Finnish, Czech, Italian, Icelandic and Danish. S1 also had the opportunity to use both their French and ICT skills, by learning how to type accents in French, Spanish, German and Italian.

At lunch there was an amazing food tasting in the department that both pupils and staff were more than happy to attend with a variety of cheeses, meats, breads and pizza. Many were also entertained by Mr. McDonald’s dancing to European music. During the food tasting some brave pupils attempted our Bushtucker trial where they sampled different foods whilst blindfolded and had to try to identify what the food was and where it came from.

Dunbar Primary School

At Dunbar Primary School we had a French snack offering served by P3s and P6s and children ordered in French.

In our lunch hall children were rewarded with one of the EDL stickers for ordering lunch in French.

Dunbar Library also supported us by putting on a week of European languages books for children to borrow.
